Buying new carpets for your home is always an exciting endeavour. You get to choose the style, material and feel that you want for your floors for the years to come. Carpets are meant to last for years and withstand wear and heavy foot traffic, that’s why, even more important than choosing the carpet is choosing the right carpet fitters.
To guide you on your search, here are some of the 5 important questions you need to ask your potential carpet fitters:
The most important thing is to know if your carpet fitter is qualified to do the job. Inquire about their work experience, how long they have been doing this and if they are associated to any established associations such as Flooring Industry Training Association (FITA), which is made up of the Contract Flooring Association (CFA) or the National Institute of Carpet and Floorlayers (NICF).
Being members of these organisations mean they have enough experience and passed exams to be considered competent and expert fitters. However, there are also a lot of expert fitters with decades of experience who are not affiliated with these groups, so make sure to assess carefully.
It’s always helpful to read some testimonials or talk to previous clients of your potential carpet fitter to know how they work, what they can do, how well they stick to the schedule agreed upon.
When asking for the cost of fitting the carpet, make sure everything is included, some carpet fitters would include VAT, uplift and removal of old carpet, while others would charge for those separately. Get a complete breakdown of what the over-all charge will be so you can compare with other potential fitters.
Will you need to purchase your own underlay or grippers, if so, ask them what kind fits well with the carpet you’re chosen.
Does the carpet need to be stretched, what type of vacuum should you use, will there be follow-ups? If there are any important information that you need to know, your fitter should volunteer these information to help you make the most of your new carpet, and increase longevity of your new floors.
