Haven’t you heard? Oriental rugs have made a come back into fashion. But, there’s an art to finding the right rug for your home.

The traditional style of rug is not for everyone. You may want a contemporary twist for your area rug. You don’t want to return home with the wrong rug.

That’s why you need our help! Here’s our guide to decide which area rug is right for your home. Let’s go!

1. Pick a Size and Shape

Do you want traditionally sized rug?

This allows you to measure and cut the rug to meet the requirements of the space. You may even want a full-size rug which covers the whole room.

Or, do you prefer modern style rug?

This would allow you to take advantage of smaller sized rugs to fit around the furniture. This is called layering!

You need to decide whether you want a classic rectangle or square rug. Or, maybe you want a circular shaped rug to suit your home.

2. Which Room in Your Home?

The right rug depends on the room. Of course, a rug suitable for a kitchen won’t necessarily work in your living room.

For a kitchen, you may want to ease the pain in your feet. Those long hours of cooking can give you exhausted legs.

Thus, you may want a thicker rug. Also, ensure you attach slip-resistant backing underneath to prevent accidents.

In your bedroom, you can create a focal point near the entrance to the bed with two smaller rugs either side. These can be an adventurous pattern since nobody will see it but you.

In the hallways, you may want a longer rug to fill up space. It is likely to receive a lot of footfall here as well. Therefore, you may want a thicker rug to withstand the pressure.

3. Choose a Colour and Pattern

Do you want the colour of your rug to match the colour palette in the room?

You may have several colours which make up the room. You could follow the “60-30-10 rule” for colour.

You need a dominant colour which makes up 60 percent of the room, such as the walls and floor. Then, you’ve got 30 percent for the rug and furniture. Lastly, 10 percent of colour is for smaller items, such as lamps and pillows.

You also need to think carefully about patterns. You don’t want to overdo it with too much loud colour and patterns.

Do you already have a lot of pattern in the room?

You may want to a subtle patterned rug. However, if you want to jazz things up with your rug, go for something bold and exciting to lift the room.

How to Pick an Area Rug?

If you’re searching for an area rug for your home, you need to know what to look for.

Don’t rush into things. You need to do your homework. Otherwise, you may come home with a rug that doesn’t match your room or doesn’t fit in the space.
